Transition Forest Row

A community in transition to a low carbon, sustainable, resilient life.

You are warmly invited to an event being organised by South East Transition Initatives called Food Resilience Preparation Day.

The background is that there is no national emergency food plan, and 2 days of food in the supermarkets. Most of us would be thrown into panic if there was an interruption to food supplies (as witnessed during the truckers strikes of 2000 and the snow days).

A group of us from the South East Transition Initiatives has been gathering to discuss this issue (see our initial forum) and has identified three main forms of food resilience planning:

1. Support and build relationships with local farmers and farming/food chains for long-term resilience - the traditional Transition approach
2. Build up our food cupboards - gradually or in one go, esp with staple carbohydrates.
3. Create long-term food stores for 'insurance' for ourselves and our neighbours.

Our first project is focusing on no3 and we're running a trial event, for each household to store about 80kg of grains and pulses in oxygen-free bags in 3-4 25L drums. Tuck that away somewhere in your house and that's 6-person-months of staple insurance with a 10-year shelf life. Cost: under £150.

Talk of change can make us uncomfortable even to the point of denial. But research has shown that people are more likely to be mutually supportive, calm and able to respond positively if they have prepared for change, both mentally and practically.

The Deadline for being part of this event is Wednesday 30th November to order the food.

If you're interested in being involved, please respond to the invitation here on the SETI ning pages and follow the links to find out more.

If there is interest we could run a similar day in Forest Row.
