Please lobby Charles Hendry on the Energy Bill

As you know, your MP Charles Hendry MP is a government minister responsible for the Energy Bill which is going through Parliamentary Committee over the next few weeks. The Bill is a crucial opportunity to improve energy efficiency of our housing stock, and to get local authorities playing an ambitious role in cutting carbon. We are getting MPs to table amendments to the Bill in the Committee to make the Bill more effective.

We need Mr Hendry to support them or at least not to oppose…

Community-owned Solar Powers Brewery

A project to put solar panels on the roof of Harvey's brewery in Lewes is tantalisingly close with only about £20,000 still to be raised to be able to place the order.

The Harvey's array on the beer chill roof will be one of Britain’s first community-owned solar power stations. Guaranteed for 25 years, there is no reason why the panels assembled in Wales should not go on…

I am happy to come and collect the bees - all you have to do is tell me where they are... swarming bees are usually very docile, so don't be tempted to swat! A SWARM OF BEES!!  HOW CAN WE HELP THEM?

Dear Fellow Residents of Ashurstwood, East Grinstead and Forest Row

The Observer Magazine cover stories yesterday

The Big Ideas Issues featuring 'Lost in Transition: Why Totnes is the town of the future' and '10 Pioneers, activists and thinkers who are changing the way we live'. 100% positive stuff really, which in my experience of journalists is quite rare! Re-inspired me. I can photocopy or scan/email it.

Stand by for the return of rationing

The Sunday Times today has a 1/2 page article in the business section about a report last week from the all party parliamentary group on peak oil and gas.

They recommend tradable personal energy quotas and it contains phrases such as 'we are running into danger. Energy shortages will occur.  We do not know when but the event is undoubted and it is not far distant.'

The tone of the article is that it will be pretty hard to introduce such…

Voltage optimisation

Is Voltage optimisation something that could make a significant difference to reduce energy consumption? I have come across this and wonder if it is something that is relatively simple to install (by an electrician) and can make savings in electricity consumption of around 10%.

"Voltage Optimisation/Voltage Power Optimisation is an effective means of saving energy,…

Win a Solarcentury solar electric system worth over £12,000

“Be your own energy company”.

Solarcentury, the UK’s leading solar energy company founded by Jeremy Leggett, is celebrating the summer sun with Transition Towns by offering one lucky homeowner the chance to win a solar electric system worth over £12,000. Generating an income of at least £800 a year for 25 years with the feed-in tariff, this system will make the winner thousands of pounds in addition to savings on electricity bills.

The competition is…

Exploring an Ancient Woodland: Home Wood

The United Nations has made 2010 the Year of Biodiversity. This isn't something that is just relevant to the Amazon or other exotic species-rich habitats around the world, its significance is all around us.

One day last week, looking at the plants and animals of Forest Row wasn't on my mind. My intention was to do a long walk to the north of the civil parish of Forest Row and get to the Surrey and Kent borders. However, it didn't quite… Continue

White Deer

See a beautiful white deer and watch the Medway and tributaries in full flow, filled with melt-water from the January snows. The deer were filmed at the end of January in the forest between Priory Road and Hindleap Warren. Find the two minute nature diary video Forest Row Late January on the video page.
