Transition Forest Row

A community in transition to a low carbon, sustainable, resilient life.

Not exactly about Forest Row, but the lovely pictures on the Guardian site of marine wildlife off British shores appealed to me, being another reminder of the wondrous biodiversity around us. We went down to the beach at Cuckmere Haven on Sunday; it is one of my favourite habitats in Sussex and I always enjoy nosing in the rockpools and exploring the flora and fauna in the valley. The picture of me on this site was taken there, surrounded by sea lavender (Limonium vulgare), and this is a rather beautiful anemone we found:

Strawberry anemone (Actinia fragacea)

There was also a piece on one of the blogs about cooking dandelions. Though I've done a few recipes from Roger Phillips' Wild Food over the years, I've never used dandelions. Maybe now is the time. Incidentally, while cycling along the Forest Way to Hartfield at the weekend I saw someone who had been gathering wild garlic leaves. I've not cooked with them either, but they smell fantastic.
